Running Coach, Personal Trainer, Marathon Runner and Ironman
Here's who I really am.
I am a 47 year old Personal Trainer and UKA certified Running Coach based in Oxford. I live with my partner and our gorgeous 16 month old daughter, Caitlin.
As a running coach I work with beginners as well as experienced athletes who are getting back into running for various reasons; I offer both face to face and online training programs. I help 'pay it forward' as a running coach at my club - Headington Road Runners in Oxford.
Here's my story.......
It hasn’t always been this way, my background is in financial services and I have worked for several large companies since I was 19. I eventually became a financial advisor and provided clients with financial advice for over 15 years which resulted in me living a pretty unhealthy lifestyle while working long hours, doing a stressful job.
Although I remained active on and off during that period, continuing to play different sports such as Football, Squash and Karate, it was mainly for the social side and always involved drink and bad food choices.
When approaching my 40s I found myself overweight and out of shape and working long hours. So after a relationship break up I decided enough was enough and it was time to get back into shape, starting with getting back into running.
I returned to running regularly and entered a few half marathons and decided that in the year I was turning 40, I would sign up for my first full distance Marathon. I picked the New York Marathon - not a bad way to start!
Completing the marathon was one of the best days of my life. It was such an amazing experience that I began a journey of half marathons (too many to mention), full marathons (New York, Berlin, Paris, London, Manchester, Abingdon and Salisbury) and thereafter pursued various distance triathlons.
In 2014 I completed my first full distance Ironman event in the UK .
After being asked by numerous colleagues and friends for help with training and tips, I decided to complete my personal training certification with FutureFit. This has not only helped with my own training but allows me to pass on the correct information and get more actively involved in helping people. I am also a qualified UK Athletics Coach in Running Fitness.
I have continued to study and gain more experience with more specific coaching courses, investing a lot of time and money developing my coaching skills. I constantly research and study to stay informed and current with the ever changing theories, training methods and trends of the fitness industry. I am then able to pass on relevant and proven techniques to help my athletes and clients get started with their running goals or help improve their current training regime.
Although my original reason for getting into shape was to get fitter, my reason for staying in shape is now very different. Now I have family commitments, and as an 'Old Dad' I want to be able to get down and play with my daughter without feeling like an old fart. When it comes to sports days, I don’t want my daughter to be embarrassed about me and I still want to compete with the other dads, even in the egg and spoon race. I also want to make sure I am around for Caitlin for as long as possible and be around to walk her down the aisle (although she won’t be allowed to date until she’s well into her 30s). I train to stay fit and healthy, nothing to do with the scales. I want Caitlin to know the fit and healthy dad who can keep up with her in the playground and park and inspire her to be the best person she can be.
